A system of command neurons in snail's escape behavior.

چکیده
Intracellular stimulation of each of the nine identified neurons released a specific withdrawal reactions. These cells fire in response to strong tactile, light and thermal stimuli releasing escape behavior, and are assumed to be command neurons.

Escape swim network interneurons have diverse roles in behavioral switching and putative arousal in Pleurobranchaea.
Escape swimming in the predatory sea slug Pleurobranchaea is a dominant behavior that overrides feeding, a behavioral switch caused by swim-induced inhibition of feeding command neurons. We have now found distinct roles for the different swim interneurons in acute suppression of feeding during the swim and in a longer-term stimulation of excitability in the feeding network. The identified patte...
متن کاملNociceptive interneurons control modular motor pathways to promote escape behavior in Drosophila
Rapid and efficient escape behaviors in response to noxious sensory stimuli are essential for protection and survival. Yet, how noxious stimuli are transformed to coordinated escape behaviors remains poorly understood. In Drosophila larvae, noxious stimuli trigger sequential body bending and corkscrew-like rolling behavior. We identified a population of interneurons in the nerve cord of Drosoph...
متن کاملOptogenetic analysis of synaptic transmission in the central nervous system of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.
A reliable method for recording evoked synaptic events in identified neurons in Caenorhabditis elegans would greatly accelerate our understanding of its nervous system at the molecular, cellular and network levels. Here we describe a method for recording synaptic currents and potentials from identified neurons in nearly intact worms. Dissection and exposure of postsynaptic neurons is facilitate...
متن کاملPostexcitatory inhibition of the crayfish lateral giant neuron: a mechanism for sensory temporal filtering.
Crayfish escape from threats by either giant neuron-mediated "reflex" tail flexions that occur with very little delay but do not allow for much sensory guidance of trajectory or by "nongiant" tail flexion responses that allow for sensory guidance but occur much less promptly. Thus, when a stimulus occurs, the nervous system must make a rapid assessment of whether to use the faster reflex system...
متن کاملThe command neuron concept
The notion of the command cell has been highly influential in invertebrate neurobiology, and related notions have been increasingly used in research on the vertebrate nervous system. The term "command neuron" implies that the neuron has some critical function in the generation of a normally occurring behavior. Nevertheless, most authors either explicitly or implicitly use a strictly operational...
